About the Centre

The Centre for Character Education leads thinking on how moral development is taught in schools, and builds the curriculum to put that thinking into practice.

Our purpose

We believe every child deserves to be taught not only what to know, but how to be. Our purpose is to give schools a coherent, rigorous structure for character education, one that lives inside the curriculum rather than competing with it.

We aim to contribute to the national conversation on character education, and to test our thinking where it matters most: in classrooms, through curriculum that teachers use every day.

Our story

Our curriculum was not designed in the abstract. It draws on 13 years of character education work with children, families and communities.

  1. 2013

    The work begins

Our founder begins working with children in India and the UK, using character education to address anti-social behaviour and youth crime.

  2. Being The Cure

    A framework takes shape

The charity Being The Cure develops a pedagogy of heroism, character through story and oracy, refined through its Saturday School for Heroism.

  3. Centre for Character Education

    Into the curriculum

The Centre for Character Education is established to bring that framework into the everyday school curriculum.

  4. Today

    Oracy Hero and English Hero

Oracy Hero is available to schools by invitation. English Hero, the full English curriculum, is in development.

Being The Cure

The pedagogy behind our curriculum originated with Being The Cure, a charity whose work with children has developed the Heroism Framework over more than a decade.

The Centre for Character Education licenses this framework from Being The Cure. The two organisations are legally and financially distinct.

What we do

  • Develop and publish our moral development framework, the Heroic Formula.
  • Build curriculum for primary schools: Oracy Hero and English Hero.
