English Hero is the English curriculum, completely refreshed in line with the government’s ambition for the new National Curriculum. It extends our approach from oracy to the whole of English. Pupils read, discuss and write about stories that carry a moral theme, so that the skills of English and the development of character are taught together rather than side by side.
English Hero includes a moral development framework in every term and every lesson. No other curriculum does this at this scale.
For schools, it means less planning and more insight: lessons are ready to teach and adapt, and assessment is combined with curriculum outcomes to show each pupil’s progression across terms and years.
Relationship to Oracy Hero
English Hero is the second tier of our curriculum and includes Oracy Hero as a component. Each term combines 25 English Hero lessons with 5 Oracy Hero lessons, so oracy remains part of the English curriculum rather than a separate strand.
Schools teaching Oracy Hero will be able to move to English Hero, with every pupil in the school moving together.
The shape of a term
Each term has 30 lessons. Writing is assessed after lessons 10 and 25, and oracy after lesson 30. Each pupil is recorded as Working Towards, Expected or Exceeded.
Inside a lesson
Every lesson is built from the same seven sections. Teachers can turn individual sections on or off to suit their class, and annotate any page by hand on the board.
Values recognition
English Hero introduces values recognition. Teachers can record a pupil showing humility, honesty or kindness at the moment it happens. Recognitions inform pupil and whole-school reports.
Class recognition is measured by participation, the proportion of pupils recognised, rather than by the number of points awarded. A raw tally rewards the few; participation encourages every pupil to be seen.
